Class 03 197 Rolling Stock 1/4 Builder Swindon Works Indroduction Date 15th June 1961 Withdrawal Date 5th July 1987 Configuration 0-6-0 Status Undergoing Repairs Number Held 03 197 Owned By Private British Railways Class 03 Diesel-Mechanical Shunter The British Railway Class 03 is a class of diesel-mechanical locomotive that was built by Swindon & Doncaster Works between 1957 - 1961, a total of 230 were produced during this time. The class was built for light duties where a larger locomotive was not needed, they were mainly assigned to shunting duties at depots and as station pilots. As British Railways started to introduce more multiple units that could be driven from both ends the demand for shunting locomotives started to diminish and so BR started to withdraw the class from 1968 onwards with many being sold on to private industry. The last of the mainline operational Class 03s had been withdrawn by 1987 due to lack of demand however, two examples on the Isle of Wight remained in service until 1993. Out of the 230 that were produced 174 were scrapped, leaving 56 examples of the class in preservation. 03 197 03197 was released from Swindon Work on 15th June 1961 originally as D2197, under Pre-TOPS, and was allocated to the Western Region (91W). Over the course of its life it was transferred to various depots including Laira, Taunton, Eastleigh & Bournemouth where it was then withdrawn in March 1974. Until it was reactivated 19 months later (October 1975) where brought out of storage and allocated to Norwich Thorpe Depot, it remained at Norwich until it was officially withdrawn in July 1987. The locomotive arrived at the Mid-Norfolk Railway in October 2018.

BR Mark 2 Carriages Rolling Stock Mk 2 TSO 5211 (A Dunford) Mk 2 FK 13446 (A Dunford) Mk 2 FK 13447 (A Dunford) Mk 2 TSO 5211 (A Dunford) 1/3 In Service 1964 - Present Builders Swindon & Derby Works Introduction Date 1963 - 1975 Body Type Steel British Railways Mark 2 Carriage After the success of the Mark 1 carriages British Railways (BR) set their sights onto a newer design, which gave birth to the British Railways Mark 2 Carriages. The main difference between a Mark 1 & Mark 2 carriage is the body & frame work. The mark 2 had been built to give them more strength than a Mark 1 which would help protect the passengers in the event of an accident. A main design change was the curvature of the body work at the bottom & sides to help combat areas of corrosion that had be come apparent on the mark 1 carriages. Over the course of Mark 2 carriages being built they started to be segregated into different categories (A,B,C,D,E & F) due to a variety of modifications that were being made during the construction of them. The biggest change came around when the Mark 2Ds started to be constructed in 1971 as they were instead fitted with air conditioning, the main differences was there were no longer any opening windows and that all types were built with Electric Train Heating only from this point onwards. Mark 2 Carriages at the MNR At present there are 13 Mark 2 carriages on site, with the MNR owning 12 of these. Throught the last 4 years, starting in 2020, 3 out of the 12 MNR owned Mark 2 carriages have had various work, repaints and overhauls which have been completed inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed. The shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532). E5211 Tourist Standard Open (TSO) 1966 Derby In Service Owned by the MNR. The class was built to be able to work passenger trains, including the Intercity services, and freight workings . They soon became a common sight across the whole country with the majority being allocated to Crewe, Cardiff Canton & Bescot. They quickly, along side the Class 37s, became one of the mainstays of the BR fleet and quickly earnt their reputation as a powerful and reliable class of locomotive. By 1986 only five out of the original 512 had been withdrawn from service, all because of serious accident damage however, with the introduction of new rolling stock and spare parts becoming scarce the decision was made to slowly start withdrawing the class. However, by 1995 only 147 locomotives had been withdrawn, still leaving 360 of the class in service. With the privatisation of the railway may of the class were bought by private operating companies and used for either freight or charters. However, as newer technology became available the class was being replaced as from 1996 to 2006 an average of 15 locomotives were take out of service per year. 62 out of the 512 produced are still active today, with 31 being preserved across Britain's Heritage Railways and another 31 still being used by mainline operating companies. A further 33 Class 47s were converted to Class 57's between 1998 & 2004. 47580 47580 was released from Brush Works on 1st September 1964, originally as D1762, and allocated to Tinsley (41A). In August 1979, it was named "County of Essex" and held this name until August 1993, it was then renamed as "Restormel" in 1995. Over the course of its working life it was transferred to March, Immingham, Finsbury Park, Stratford, Bristol Bath Road, Crewe & Toton. 47580 was then withdrawn from traffic by then owner EWS in April 2004 and then stored at Toton, until the Stratford 47 Group purchased it. The locomotive is mainline registered and is often operating away with West Coast Railways, from its base at The Mid-Norfolk Railway. The locomotive arrived back at the MNR in July 2021 and since then has received a repaint into its Queen's Platinum Jubilee livery in June 2022 to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. The repaint of 47580 was carried out inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed, the shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532). The MNR announced in November 2024 that it was purchasing 47580, & its sister 47596, from The Stratford 47 group, the full article can be found here .
